Hydrangea scandens ssp ‘Chinensis‘ Japanese Sweet hydrangea.
Rare species of hydrangea.
A small species to 1.25 mtr h x w usually found growing in shady sites in the wild
mostly on steep ground. Where the small shrubs are only 1m tall forming
twiggy plants with many slender very dark red-brown branches, bearing
small leaves only 3-4 cm long that are deeply serrated. The white maturing
to yellow flowers are carried in most of the upper leaf axils in small
cymes, which smother the branches in warmer months. Best grown in a well drained but retentive
soil in sun to light shade sited out of wind.
